I get this story often enough that I thought it was worth a post.
DON’T PRE-PAY FOR WORK IN THE PHILIPPINES.
Clearly this isn’t a 100% of the time rule, because there are times when it’s appropriate.
Just DON’T do it with a new employee.
Don’t buy them a laptop.
Don’t pay their internet bill.
Don’t pay for their sisters medical bills.
Not with a new employee.
Filipinos are shy enough as is. If they’re not comfortable with you yet, and they’re asking for money up front, for work they haven’t done yet, there’s something wrong.
Here’s a conversation a friend of mine had recently with a new employee:
It was the 2nd person he had hired who was asking for money up front. The first person disappeared. He learned his lesson for the second person.
Are Filipinos the only people that can work with this company?
I know that scammers can be found in every corner of the globe but what really bugs me is that Demmar's name was published as an example and yet the employer's name wasn't. That's totally unfair! The contractor didn't do anything wrong per se, he/she was just asking for an advance and was denied. There's nothing wrong with that and it was the employer's right to do so. But to publish only the contractor's name is discriminating.
Lol WOW a lot of controversy over everything John posts.. Do you all not realize how hard it is for many Filipinos to find work and what a blessing it is for them to get paid full time to work from home?
Funny enough I just gave my worker a full months pay in advanced and this post made me a bit nervous.. So far so good she hasn't left me yet! She had been telling me about her daughter being sick for about a month and when she told me she needed it to take her daughter out of the hospital I just couldn't refuse.
This is of course after working with her for many months.

Great advice about letting them challenge your rates. My experience is that if someone is willing to challenge your rates, they're confident enough to say something when they have a problem. They usually end up being good workers.

This is not always the case.. I too transcribes for an offshore company for 7 years now. I have not encountered problems with payment until recently & has not paid me for my work from April 2016 to October 2016. I have been emailing them but no response yet. Could you please help me on what appropriate action should I do? Thank you in advance.
