Well, Paul Allen wanted Google to buy Skype. It didn’t happen.
But…
Google did come out with their own voip service that as far as I can tell works just as well as Skype. I’ve used it and the sound seems to be a little clearer and faster than skype. I’m not really that sure though, since skype works so well.
It works seamlessly with gmail, importing your gmail contacts into it and easily allowing you to browse your gmail contacts to invite people to download it.
It’s a work of Google.
The problem now is just like a few years ago with instant messaging when you had to have icq, msn, and yahoo instant messager clients open. Then came gaim and trillian. I’d bet the single voip client that will do both google and skype isn’t very far away.
