I got this email from one of my OFS graphic designers the other day. She makes creatives for social media (posts and ads):

Good morning.

I will try to finish the Ads as soon as I can. I am currently at the hospital. My father got car accident yesterday.  The neck of his femur was broken (Hip fracture) and needs an orthopedic surgery. Doctor’s are still monitoring him coz his blood sugar also rise.

I am here on the hospital but I am still working to finish contents for the social. And again, I will also try to work on it given the situation.

Thank you for your kind considerations.

My response was

Thank you for letting me know.  I’m so sorry about your dad!

If you can’t get things done, don’t worry about it.  We’re not super concerned if things don’t get done right away.

Also, feel free to take time off.  We don’t track time off. Take as much time as you need.

A couple thoughts:

1.  accidents happen
2. our policy for paid time off is you can take as much time as you want/need. We don’t track it. We find the longer people work for us, the more they feel free to take time off, which is exactly how I think it should be.
I’ve never had someone take advantage of this.

John
