My son just returned home (YAY!!!) from serving as a missionary for 2 years in the Philippines.

He lived with the people.
He lived in poor places.
He spent his time in people’s houses.
He walked the streets.
He rode the jeepneys.
He spoke Tagalog (he became very fluent).

What’s the biggest thing that impressed you about the Philippines?

“The heat!”

“Oh, I love the people. They’re such good people. I have so many amazing friends. I love the food. So much of the culture is great.  But it was the constant, oppressive heat…It’s just so hot!”

The day after he returned I took him into the mountains. It was sunny, calm, and 65 degrees.  He put on his ski coat, put on the hood, and sat in the sun shivering.
It has been 85 degrees at home and he’s walking around with a sweatshirt on.

Over the years I’ve had OFS say things to me about the heat.

“It’s too hot to work so I have to shift my schedule, I hope that’s ok.”

I never understood until now.

The heat in the Philippines is oppressive.  Even if you grew up with it.

Just something to be aware of.
