Heads-up that June 12, 2024, this Wednesday, is a regular holiday in the Philippines.
It’s their 126th Independence Day, commemorating their independence from over 300 years of Spanish rule.
Like any regular holiday, it’s a bank holiday. There’s no school on this day, and most workers are given a day off.
Filipinos spend their Independence Day differently from how the US celebrates Independence Day (the 4th of July).
Their celebration is more formal and restrained. They’ll wave flags and have parades and other commemoration events, but they’re usually organized by the government, not individuals.

So, if you’re wondering why your OFS is out on a Wednesday, it’s because of this holiday. They’re probably out participating in an event in their community or spending time with family and friends, most of whom would also have the day off.

PS. I’m home from our cycling trip to Italy/Croatia. We finished with riding 680 miles in 17 days with about 32,000 feet of climbing in there. It was hard but amazing.
We saw cathedrals, ruins, beaches, remnants of the Yugoslavia war of the 1990s, big cities, little cities. We stayed with people where we learned how they live. We rode our bikes on their bike paths and on their busy roads. We at pizza and pasta and cheese and fish… Turns out, people are pretty similar wherever we go in the world. People are good. They’re kind. They’re helpful. More and more they speak English. Their flags are red, white, and blue. They love their country and their kids and their freedom and their neighborhoods. And we learned to love them. It was sad coming home.
