Remember back then I told you how Islamic holidays are often announced late in the Philippines?

Well, they finally announced Jun 17, 2024, next Monday, is a regular holiday to observe  Eid’l Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice.

I know, it’s a little frustrating when they announce holidays late. Why aren’t these holidays set in stone?

Here’s an oversimplified explanation for why these holidays are announced late.

Islamic holidays are based on the 1445 Hijrah Islamic Lunar Calendar. This calendar differs from the Gregorian calendar (the one we use), so holidays like Eid’l Adha and Eid’l Fitr have different yearly dates.

There is a way to predict when these dates are ahead of time. However, the dates must be confirmed by the Muslim community and the Islamic Directorate of the Philippines, Inc. Once the President of the Philippines is advised of these dates, he’ll declare them as regular holidays by proclamation.

Is this going to affect you? If your OFS lives in a predominantly Muslim area or they’re practicing Muslims, they will want to take the day off.

Otherwise, your OFS will likely just keep working as normal.
