I just read this excellent blog post from my friend Dennis Yu:
https://dennisyu.com/the-mindless-video-editor-and-seo-expert-are-irreversibly-doomed/
Reading this reminded me of why I would rather hire someone young and hungry rather than someone who is super skilled and has years of experience.
Workers who are young and hungry are often eager to prove themselves. They know that they’re at a disadvantage when it comes to skills. But what they have in abundance is a willingness to listen, learn, and understand.
That’s how Joven, my first hire, got to where he is right now.
He knew nothing when I hired him. But he took every opportunity to listen, learn, and understand my business.
He’s not just doing what I tell him to do. He’s part of planning, strategizing, and executing. He can anticipate and fix problems. He knows how every part of my business works together.
He doesn’t have a fancy degree or an MBA. He’s not a rockstar SEO or social media expert. He’s an expert in MY business.
He shows up.
He tries really hard.
He thinks.
He learns about my customers and their problems and needs.
What makes him, Joven, indispensable is the fact that he’s willing to think through anything and learn anything. He knows my business inside out.
He knows what it needs to grow. He helps me make that possible.
You can only get to that point when you’re willing to start small. Learn how to do one task at a time. Try to understand how the different functions work together. Find ways to improve your work.
This only happens when you’re young and hungry.
