Helping your Filipino VA through disasters
The Philippines had a rough 2025.
The back-to-back earthquakes and typhoons have taken a toll on the country. Julia even told me that she was starting to experience “disaster fatigue”, being bombarded with news about another disaster almost every day.

Because of that, we’ve been getting a lot of emails from business owners who want to help their Filipino VAs through the disasters.
Some have given salary advances. Some have given the 13th month early. Others have offered salary loans.
All of these are good things. They can definitely help your Filipino VAs recover.
However, I also know that some of you are concerned about how long it’ll take for your VA to recover. Or whether you can afford to keep giving help if this keeps happening again.
Based on my experience and that of other business owners like myself, it often takes them only a few days to recover.
Mark, one of my devs, kept trying to work despite having to travel to get internet after the typhoon.
My VAs in Cebu and Mindanao worked the next day after the earthquake like it was nothing.
My partner Dan and I even have to tell them that they can take the time off to focus on their families.
For Filipinos, getting back to work is part of their recovery process. They want things to get back to normal. Even if it’s working a bit less while waiting for their electricity and internet to be reconnected.
If you want to be sure of when your VA can get back to work, you can always ask. Ask how they’re doing. Ask for updates.
They understand that you have a business to run. They know that you’re relying on them. It’s not too much to ask.
As to how to help your VA sustainably recover from a disaster, there are many ways to do it.
You can set up an emergency fund that your VAs can borrow against.
Or you can send their 13th month early, just like some employers did.
There’s no standard here, but I am certain your VA wants to work. They want to work with you.
They’re not expecting handouts.
